Retirement Age issue of Colleges in Chandigarh- Reinstatement

In response to an interim order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Chandigarh administration has initiated measures concerning the reinstatement of retired college faculty members who have not yet reached the age of 65. This follows a directive from the Central Administrative Tribunal last year, mandating an increase in the retirement age from 58 to 65. Senior advocate Chetan Mittal, representing the Chandigarh administration, has confirmed compliance with the court’s directive, stipulating that eligible retired employees involved in litigation and not yet 65 years old (62 for librarians) must deposit their entire retirement benefits by June 27 to be considered for rejoining their former positions. The administration has dispatched letters to eligible retirees outlining the requirement for payment via specified banking procedures at the State Bank of India, Treasury Branch, Sector 17. Rejoining duties will only be permitted upon successful deposit of retirement benefits, with no provision for extension beyond the stipulated deadline. Currently serving faculty members are also permitted to continue until reaching the age of 65. As of the latest update, a significant portion of eligible retirees have complied with the deposit requirement, facilitating the commencement of the reinstatement process. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for July 16, 2024.
