Chandigarh: The adjutant general (AG) branch of the defence ministry has made it clear that the released emergency commissioned officers (ECOS) and short service commissioned officers (SSCOs) who fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars are fully entitled to Rs 15 lakh under the Yudh Samman Yojna as announced by defence minister Rajnath Singh.

WHO ARE ECOS/SSCOS

Inducted into the army in the 1965 and 1971 wars because of shortage of officers at that time, some of them were relieved from the force on completion of their engagement. They were not given any kind of benefit except medical facilities through the ex-servicemen contributory health scheme in 2019 after a long legal battle.

In its letter dated Aug 2, the AG branch of the ministry of defence (MoD) has asked the department of ex-servicemen welfare (pension and policy wing) of the ministry to process the cases of 125 veterans whose details have already been verified and furnished through the letter dated March 7, 2023, for providing the one-time ex gratia of Rs 15 lakh to such veterans. The AG branch has made it clear that any further delay would only dilute the purpose of the proposal as most of these veterans are at an advanced stage of their lives. The scheme would have a one-time financial liability of around Rs 18 crore.
