In this post we will discuss about the registration of golden temple under Foreign Contribution Act (FCRA) in 2010 which will allow the temple to receive contributions from foreign nationals.

Golden temple gets FCRA registration for foreign funds

After more than three and a half decades, foreign adherents of Sikhism will now be able to credit contributions or ‘daswandh’ (one-tenth of income) directly to a dedicated account of the Golden Temple after the Union Government approved Sri Harmandir Sahib under the Foreign Contribution Act (FCRA) in 2010.

After 1984, foreign-based sangat was barred from direct contributions to the Golden Temple account. Now, after registration with the FCRA, they will be able to satisfy their religious ambitions, “said SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal here on Thursday. The management of the Golden Temple had applied for registration of the FCRA on 27 May. The registration was approved by the Ministry of the Union on 9 September.

Legal Standpoint

Longowal said that after 1984, foreign-based sangat had to find alternate means of sending donations or daswandhs to the Golden Temple.”Many devotees used to give donations for langar, spread of Sikhism or welfare work through their relatives or friends visiting Amritsar,” he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “Sri Darbar Sahib’s divinity gives us courage. Sangat has been unable to serve there for decades worldwide. Modi’s decision to give FCRA to Sri Harmandir Sahib deepens Seva ‘s link with the Sangat world-wide and Sri Darbar Sahib. Union Minister for Civil Aviation and Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, “Service to Humanity is a core pillar of Sikhism. Deeply grateful to PM @narendramodi ji & HM @AmitShahJi for enabling Sikh Sangat worldwide to contribute to Sewa at Sri Darbar Sahib via FCRA. The submission was submitted on 27 May. Authorisation issued on 9 September 2020

Last Wednesday evening, Union Minister for Food Processing Industry Harsimrat Kaur Badal broke the news with her tweet reading, “Happy to share that MHA has given approval under FCRA to Sri Harmandir Sahib. This will encourage the sanctuary to accept ‘sewa’ from all over the world and go a long way to spread Gurusahab’s philosophy of ‘sarbat da bhala.’ I am thankful to @AmitShah Ji for making this possible.
