HARYANA COUPLE, MARRIED, SEEKS PROTECTION OF THEIR LIVE-IN RELATIONSHIP
A couple both of whom are already married to other partners have approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for protection against their relatives who are opposed to their Live-in Relationship. The petitioner couple has sought protection of life and liberty from unnecessary harassment at the hands of their relatives.

The petitioners include 29-year old Opisha and 49-year old Shabbir, living together at present in Sohna town of Gurgaon. Both are already married to other people. According to the women petitioner she had developed some intimacy with the male petitioner for a long time, which converted into friendship and eventually both of them decided to opt for a live-in relationship. The woman petitioner claims that she informed her parents about this decision to live-in with her male partner but the relatives in her family are more aggressive regarding this decision and are threatening to harm their life and liberty.

According to the petitioners they have tried their level best to convince the relatives but they had warned them of dire consequences of going against their wishes and would even kill them. They claim that they had submitted a representation to Gurgaon police on June 21 but they have not been provided protection till now.

The counsel for the petitioner argued that both the petitioners are major and have a good understanding with one another and only want to stay together in a Live-in relationship. Justice J S Puri after hearing the petition issued notice to the Gurgaon police seeking a reply on the issue. The relatives of the woman who are opposed to the Live-in relationship and are allegedly threatening the couple are also asked to respond on the issue.
