In a noteworthy consumer protection matter, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Mohali, has reportedly directed a solar energy company to rectify defects in a rooftop solar power system within a specified period, failing which it may be required to refund the entire amount paid by the consumer.

Consumer Commission Gives Solar Company Final Opportunity to Rectify Defective System or Refund Entire Amount.

The complaint was filed by a doctor who had installed a solar power system at his residence with the expectation of reducing electricity costs and promoting renewable energy usage. According to the report, the system was installed at a cost of approximately ₹2.92 lakh.

However, shortly after installation, the consumer allegedly began experiencing recurring technical issues. The complaint stated that the solar plant repeatedly malfunctioned, leading to interruptions in power generation and causing inconvenience despite repeated requests for repairs.

The matter became more complicated when components such as the inverter reportedly had to be replaced more than once. Even after replacement, the consumer claimed that technical defects persisted and the system failed to perform as promised.

During the proceedings, the company reportedly argued that some of the problems were linked to equipment manufactured by third parties rather than deficiencies in installation. It also contended that efforts had been made to address the complaints and replace defective components.

After examining the material on record, the Consumer Commission reportedly observed that the consumer had been facing difficulties for a prolonged period despite investing a substantial amount in the system. The Commission noted that after-sales service and effective maintenance form an important part of a seller’s obligations.

The Commission therefore granted the company a final opportunity to make the system fully operational within one month. If the deficiencies are not rectified within the stipulated time, the company may be required to refund the entire amount paid by the consumer.

The case highlights the growing importance of consumer rights in the renewable energy sector. As solar installations become increasingly common, purchasers are entitled not only to quality products but also to reliable after-sales support and warranty services.

The decision serves as a reminder that businesses offering technological products must ensure that performance commitments are met and that consumers receive effective remedies where products repeatedly fail to function as promised.
