Education is a big business in India and especially for classes 11th and 12th after which competitive exams are held.

There is no such regulation in India for coaching institutes or competitive centres where exorbitant money is looted from the parents in the name of tuition charges.

The Institute can’t charge entire fees for two years in one go held consumer court.

Coaching Institute Deficient in Services

The Consumer forum held FIIT-ZEE liable for deficiency in services as the student was unable to understand the lectures that lead him leave the classes in between.

This mostly happens where coaching institutes don’t give test classes before for a good amount of time and as a result the students have to suffer.

The forum ordered refund of Rs 50 k (approx) and Rs. 10 k each for compensation and litigation cost.

The FIIT-JEE institute was clearly at fault for unfair trade practice and harassment. Charging fee in advance is clearly against the consumer interest. The institute could have charged for an year but not for two years in advance – consumer court held.

Tution centre and coaching classes have been exploiting students for ages and now with decisions like this, accountability will come into play.

I am hopeful, students community will now be aware of their rights and in case they have any complaint against the coaching institute, they may take route to consumer courts across the country.
